Stuffed Animal Husbandry: Caring for Winnie-the-Pooh and Friends

The New York Public Library is the proud home of the REAL Winnie-the-Pooh, the actual toy teddy bear that once belonged to Christopher Robin Milne, son of A. A. Milne, and the basis for the character Christopher Robin in the beloved Winnie-the-Pooh stories.

Winnie and his friends Tigger, Eyore, Kanga, and Piglet (also former well-loved toys of Christopher Robin Milne) have resided at the New York Public Library since 1987. We have an important job in taking care of Winnie and friends; these iconic stuffed animals are visited by thousands of children and their parents every year, and we want to ensure that they are safe and well tended so that many more generations of children can see the REAL toys that inspired their favorite stories.

Our first and most important strategy for preserving the stuffed animals is to monitor, record, and control the environment in which they are stored and exhibitedthis includes temperature, relative humidity, and light levels. High temperatures and humidity levels can encourage pests or mold growth, and excessive light exposure can cause fading and degradation of the fabric. We aim for stable and moderate temperature and relative humidity levels, and we try to minimize the total amount of light to which the objects are exposed.

The stuffed animals received a thorough examination and treatment by a professional object conservator several years ago, and they received custom-designed armatures or mounts intended the minimize the physical stress placed upon them while on display. They are routinely inspected by NYPL's own conservation staff. The objects are kept in a secure case while on exhibit, and are stored in acid-free boxes and tissue in secure storage areas when not on exhibit. They are carefully handled only by conservation staff when it is necessary to move them, which we do as infrequently as possible due to their fragility.

Mary Poppins artifacts?

I enjoyed seeing the Pooh animals in The ABC Of It exhibit, and also the items on display that were related to P.L. Travers and the Mary Poppins books. I remember seeing more Mary Poppins items at the Donnell library. Will these ever be on display again?

The Pooh friends

I remember the day that I saw these animals for the first time at the New York Public Library. Their gentle presence brought me a sense of stillness and peace, a goodness of spirit. Thank you for taking such good care of these little friends.

Will Winnie the Pooh be on display Wed 6 Sept 2016

Will Winnie the Pooh and the other animals be on display next week - Wed 6 Sept 2016? We will be visiting from Australia and would love to see them?

Pooh

Being a Pooh fan, I visited my favourite bear and his pals as soon as I found out they live in NY some years ago (I live in Toronto). Whenever I was there, I think of them with Christopher Robin playing in the forest and I have done an extensive amount of research on Milne and Pooh these years. Surely I will be back to see the refurbished toys in no time. Three cheers to Pooh!

Sizes of the Stuffed Animals

Hello!! I was wondering what the exact sizes are of these stuffed animals? I am from Chicago and have visited the public library once before but I cannot remember how big they were!

The post lists their range

The post lists their range "The stuffed animals range in height from 25" (Eeyore, the biggest) to 4 1/2" (Piglet, the smallest)."

Visiting Winnie the Pooh and friends

Visiting Winnie the Pooh and friends: I was in Manhattan a few years ago on a business trip, I passed the library with the banner regarding the Winnie the Pooh and friends exhibit. Mind you I’m in my mid-50s at this point. I ran up to the door where people were exiting but the doors were closed. The security guard informed me that I could not enter because the museum was closing. I said but Winnie the Pooh is in there! And he said kindly Winnie the Pooh is sleeping right now he’ll wake up tomorrow morning at 10 o’clock.

Pooh & friends

Love love love it ! I always watched the series as a child on the Disney channel and had to see the live version when it came out in theatres! This story will forever remain a childhood favorite. ! Xo

When May We Visit and See Pooh & Friends?

Are Pooh and Friends currently on display at the library? What dates do you anticipate they will be on display in the near future? Thank you!
